Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
It depends on the project. A single vanity, a new front door, and a full remodel are very different jobs, and material choices alone can move the number significantly. Since we're not tied to one product line, we can work with tile, acrylic, hardwood, luxury vinyl, or whatever fits your space and budget.
The only way to give you a real number is to see the space.
What makes you different?
We don't have a product to push. Companies that sell one system have to make your remodel fit the system; we look at your space first and then talk materials. That's the short version. The longer version is 40+ years of combined experience between Ben and Mark, a locally owned team you can actually reach, and an exact quote that reflects what the job really takes — not a low number that grows once the walls are open.
We're also independently owned. No franchise fees, no corporate pricing set by someone who's never seen your house. Just local remodelers pricing your project fairly.
Will a remodel actually improve my home’s value?
Absolutely. Bathroom remodels return 60–80% at resale.
Kitchen updates (minor projects especially) return 70–113%.
Entry door replacements return 188–216%.
Even master bedroom updates return 53–75%.
Smart remodeling pays off..
Can I pick out my own materials?
Absolutely. Some customers want us to handle everything from design through install, and some already know exactly what they want. Either way works.
If you'd rather shop it yourself, go for it — Menards, Home Depot, Lowe's, a specialty tile or plumbing showroom, wherever you like. Pick out the toilet, the door, the flooring, the vanity, the paint color, and we'll install it. We're not tied to one product line and we don't make money by forcing you into ours.
Can I finance my remodel?
Yes. We work with homeowners on financing options. Discuss payment plans during your free consultation.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Great Plains Construction of Central Iowa is registered with the State of Iowa (Contractor Registration #C149656) and carries insurance. We're happy to provide proof of both before work starts — you should ask any contractor for it, and a good one won't hesitate.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in Urbandale and serve the Des Moines metro, including Clive, Waukee, West Des Moines, Johnston, Grimes, Ankeny, Windsor Heights, Urbandale, and Des Moines proper. If you're just outside that list, call us anyway at (515) 745-4860 — we'll tell you honestly whether we can get to you.
Can you make a bathroom safer for someone aging in place?
Yes, and it's something we specialize in. Whether you're planning ahead for yourself or trying to help a parent stay in their home, a bathroom can usually be made much safer without making it look like a hospital room.
That can mean a curbless or low-threshold shower you don't have to step over, properly anchored grab bars, a built-in bench, non-slip flooring, a comfort-height toilet, or a handheld shower head. Some of these are small changes; others are part of a full remodel. We'll walk the space with you, talk through what actually matters for the person using it, and give you options at different price points.
Do you do small jobs, or only full remodels?
Both. A single vanity swap gets the same attention as a full remodel. New toilet, one exterior door, painting a room, a shower that needs replacing — those are all normal work for us.
You’re a new company — what’s your experience?
The name is new. The people aren't.
Great Plains Construction of Central Iowa LLC was registered in Iowa in 2024. It is owned and run by the same team behind One Day Doors & Closets of Central Iowa, and between us we have more than 40 years in remodeling, doors, and home improvement. We formed Great Plains so we could offer the full range of work our customers kept asking for instead of being limited to one product line.
We're locally owned, we live here, and we're not a franchise taking direction from a corporate office in another state. When you call, you're talking to the people who will actually be in your home.
